The Compass and the Clock

The Compass and the Clock

I just took possession of a new vehicle and I am thrilled with all the vehicle can do. The bluetooth interface with my iPhone is really amazing and fun. I downloaded the OnStar app and I can lock, unlock and start the vehicle all from my phone. I really like it.

Another feature involves directions and the map. Again I use the app and it sends the destination and route to the vehicle and it gives me turn by turn directions. The soft voice offers me updates regarding my progress and let the people at my destination know when I will arrive.

Alas, what if life and leadership were like this app and vehicle? Turn by Turn directions and calm voice gently telling us we’ve made a wrong turn or a miscalculation. A compass that overs a quick alternative route in order to get back on course. A clock that pings and gives us indication of our progress or lack there of and gives us a good idea of when we will arrive.

Leadership offers the opportunities to learn and as Dr. Samuel Chand shares in his new book Leadership Pain, we will grow as a leader only to the level that we can tolerate the pain it takes to lead. Ouch!

The challenge in leading people and projects revolves around the process. Leadership like life teaches us through experience and experience is the toughest teacher of all. This teacher always gives the test first and the lesson afterward.

However, when we are able to merge the clock and the compass together, we might not get turn by turn directions but we will reach a new level of effectiveness never before realized.

  1. Begin with the end/destination in mind and work back from there.
  2. Build into your schedule periodic progress checks, don’t be fearful – learn early if you made a wrong turn.
  3. Bolster your pain tolerance – leading is journey that is often rewarding and sometimes tough, you’ll need perseverance.
  4. Merge the clock and compass together and let them fuel you to your destination.
